DAVID ORTH

As a sculptor and furniture maker, frequent requests for cremation urns surprised David. But he accepted the challenges and tried. While the funeral industry seemed busy cranking out creepy or silly urns, he buckled down to re-think the whole thing - the tone, the forms, something more expansive. Forged bronze urns eventually became another serious direction David would apply his art.

David’s work voices deeply human themes in the wordless language of natural materials and understated form. He continues to develop new urn designs and find satisfaction in helping others in this small way.

"Orth's art is amazing, overwhelming . . . the primal vs the ethereal . . . rock and roll, the blues, arias."
 - author James A. Mangum

David has taught sculpture and design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Chicago-based for decades, Orth now works from his studio in the Ozark hills of NW Arkansas.
